Zdeněk Sýkora – a renowned Czech painter whose works are included in many significant collections of modern art worldwide – will celebrate his 90th birthday this year (born on 3 February 1920). This Olomouc exhibition is a comprehensive display of his paintings and sculptures. Sýkora is one of the pioneers of computer art, that from the start had to face its numerous opponents who rejected the connection of painting and the computer – amongst other reasons due to the fears that the computer would deprive painting of all emotionality. For Sýkora, on the other hand, the application of artificial intelligence provided the opportunity to examine the combinatorial possibilities of the interrelations between some elementary geometric shapes. It might seem that such a conception of Sýkora’s work can hardly provide for an emotional dimension, but this is not true. Sýkora’s pictures reflect the world in constant motion as well as the effort to understand its principles.
