Salon, Kabinet
20. 6. – 13. 10. 2019
The Book of the 20th Century is made up of collections of books, magazines and collections, edited by the prominent artists of the 20th century. The focus of the collection is Czech book production, which is systematically supplemented with foreign publications.
The exhibition will present the development of the Czech and German books from the beginning of the 20th century, reflecting the artistic trends of Art Nouveau, symbolism, decadence and later Expressionism and Cubism. The main chapter is then the period of interwar avant-garde – functionalistic-oriented book adaptations, constructivist typography, photography and photomontage on book envelopes and book adaptations in the spirit of poetism and surrealism. The exhibition will focus on the specifics of Czech and German book production, how it was influenced in the neighboring countries and what differed.
